Highlights of Election Day


I have been working in the absentee department at the Supervisor of Elections for 4 weeks now. People call me and ask for their ballots to be mailed to them, usually elderly people that can't get out of the house anymore. Yesterday was election day and there weren't a lot of calls so I was shooed down to the reception area to help out a swamped receptionist. Keep in mind Florida is a closed primary state. What that means is you must be registered as a democrat or republican to vote on the main candidates: governor, senate, house, congress. Folks who are registered as "no party affililiation" or "independent" etc. could only vote on the school board and judges. When the general election rolls around in November, then they can vote on the main races. Let me tell you I had some pissed off people calling in yesterday. I realize it's my job to inform you of state laws regarding our voting. I realize in no way are you responsible for your own choices. I do apologize. Here are some fun examples for your entertainment.
Her: "You tell us to get out and vote then you won't let me vote on anything!!!"Me: "Ma'am, I'm sorry, but Florida is a closed primary state you must be registered as a demo/rep to vote on those races."Her: "Well that is just stupid. I want that changed. I want to go back and vote on the governor race and if you won't let me, I'm not going to pay my taxes!! How 'bout that?"Please don't. Please don't pay your taxes because you chose to register independent. I felt like Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka trying to keep Violet from chewing the gum.....Her: I cannot tell you how angry I am. I just got home from voting and why are there no curtains around the voting machines? I need a curtain to vote. I need my privacy!!!!Me: Rendered speechlessHer: I don't tell people my party affiliation. To me that is like tellng someone my social security number. I wasn't going to tell him my party affiliation!! How dare he ask me that!!Yes, your party affiliation is as sacred as your social, your mother's maiden name and the name of your first pet. You keep that under lock and key missy!!Did anyone else notice - all those examples were women?? I'm slightly ashamed to be one of them!I also have to add that I was there for 15 hours yesterday. By about 6 p.m. I was one silly, slap-happy biotch!!!
